Guide for Churches: Hiring an Interpreter
As ambassadors of Jesus, we want to reflect His love and hospitality in the way that we welcome and honor Deaf people in our churches
Step 1: Know Your Need
Before hiring an interpreter:
Meet with the Deaf person requesting an interpreter to better understand their communication needs. Do they have preferred interpreters? Preferences for in-person interpreter OR video remote interpreter (VRI)?
Use the website Deaf Church Where, to find existing Deaf churches or churches with Deaf ministries in your area.
Reach out to those who are currently welcoming the Deaf community and learn from them
After connecting with local resources, or if none exist, follow the steps below to hire an interpreter.
Step 2: Find Interpreters
Decide internally whether your church wants interpreters who are believers or is open to non-believers. Communicate this clearly with the agency.
If your service exceeds an hour, you may need two interpreters. This ensures your intended message is excellent and clear.
Search online for local sign language interpreting agencies to inquire about interpreters for regular, in-person services.
Fill out the Sonshine Interpreting form at the link provided. They will reach out to their network to share your need with Christian interpreters in your area.
Step 3: Preparing for launch
Follow the suggestions from the Sonshine PDF “How to Welcome the Deaf Community” (QR code)
Create a workflow to ensure interpreters receive the resources they need, including:
Full order of service with transition times
Sermon notes, at a minimum, scripture and main points
